Facilitate collaboration
We aim to foster close engagement between student volunteers, existing social justice organisations and members of the legal industry in order to maximise the effectiveness of policy reform efforts.
Advocate for policy reform
Advocate for policy reform on issues such as youth justice, the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and prison reform.
ENGAGE STUDENTS
Provide real-world experience to student volunteers looking to apply themselves to the law outside of an academic context. By participating with WAJA, we hope that law students will enter and participate in legal practice with profoundly socially-conscious mindsets.
EFFECTIVE LAW REFORM NETWORK
Our goal is to combine the strengths of different stakeholders to better coordinate social justice reform efforts. By engaging the talent and relative availability of student volunteers with the professionalism and experience of those in the legal profession and social justice organisations, we seek to create a network that will be both long-lasting and efficacious in its reform efforts.
The key features of WAJA are:
Efficient collaborative networks
By engaging a Project Supervisor and Mentor in each project, we aim to foster direct collaboration between students, legal professionals and social justice organisations.
quality deliverables
Our aim is to produce high-quality materials that are directly beneficial to social justice reform efforts. Our teams consist of student volunteers who are passionate about social justice reform. Direct input from Project Supervisors and Mentors ensures professionalism, quality and relevance in our work.
Student development
Student volunteers participate in training workshops to develop their skills in a variety of areas ranging from report writing to campaign implementation and marketing.
These sessions offer real-world skill development to our volunteers that goes beyond purely academic applications.
