New Project #1 announced: Aboriginal Justice Advisory Mechanisms in Western Australia
WA Justice Association is excited to announce our first project for Semester 1.
Project Team 1 will be undertaking the project topic: Aboriginal Justice Advisory Mechanisms in Western Australia. The project is in partnership with Social Reinvestment WA (SRWA), and will be supervised by Sophie Stewart (SRWA) and Reginald Ramos (SRWA).
The aim of this project is to produce a consultation report on potential Aboriginal justice advisory mechanisms in Western Australia. The team will consult with Aboriginal stakeholders on proposals such as an Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council and an Aboriginal Justice Advisory Agreement. In this respect, the project aims to promote Aboriginal-led justice solutions.
The purpose of this consultation report is to develop an ideal structure and operation of potential WA Aboriginal justice advisory mechanisms, based on considerations put forward by Aboriginal stakeholders and models in other jurisdictions. The report will be used to directly inform SRWA’s next phase of campaigning and submissions to State Government.
The Project Team is made up of five students: Isabelle Bavcevic (Team Leader), Rory O’Sullivan, Maria Ambrose, Helena Trang and Jit Neo. The project will be mentored by Ruth Dineen, an experienced lawyer from the Aboriginal Legal Service who specialises in criminal advocacy work.
Meetings commenced in Week 1 of the University of Western Australia’s Semester 1 period. The project will run for 13 weeks.
Please keep up to date with our social media for updates on our projects. Also keep an eye out for original research and content from our Pilot Project report (in partnership with SRWA) on raising the age of criminal responsibility beginning early April.
