Second Semester 2 Project announced: WAAMH Project Team

WA Justice Association is excited to announce our second project for Semester 2, 2021.

Our WAAMH Project Team will be undertaking the project topic: Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Model for People with Mental Health Issues in the Criminal Justice System. This project is in partnership with WA Association for Mental Health (WAAMH), and is supervised by Roshani Shrestha (Senior IPS Support & Evaluation Officer – WAAMH).

The aim of the project is to produce an implementation guide that describes a proposed IPS model of employment, supported by an accompanying research report which provides an evidence base for its integration into the WA criminal justice system.

The purpose of this project is to address the overrepresentation of people with a mental illness in the criminal justice system by analysing the potential use of a specialist mental health employment service to prevent recidivism. The final paper will address some of the key factors and challenges of implementing this service in the criminal justice setting, and the findings will be incorporated into the next phase of WAAMH’s Prevent Support Heal campaign.

The WAAMH Project Team is comprised of 5 students: Shiya Tee (Team Leader), Rhianna Dehne, Alex Di Rosso, Aisha Chaudhry and Jessica Huynh. The team will be mentored by Jay Leary and Libby Plajzer, both of preeminent global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills. Jay is a Partner and Global Head of Mining, and undertakes a range of pro bono work for refugee applicants, mental health organisations and Aboriginal corporations. Libby is a solicitor who has previous spent 18 months at the Supreme Court of Western Australia as Associate to the Principal Registrar, and Judicial Support Officer in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court.
