The Sunday Times covers Tom Penglis' story and WAJA
The Sunday Times has published a three-page spread on WA Justice Association (WAJA) Co-Founder and Executive Director Tom Penglis.
Tom Penglis spoke with Rhianna Mitchell about his experiences and observations in Western Australia’s prison system, where he witnessed the injustices that many inmates endure from what Tom describes as a broken system. Tom describes how these experiences and the stories of his fellow inmates motivated him to co-found WAJA.
“I am never going to forget the people that I met, and the stories that I heard, for the rest of my life. If there is one thing that I am sure of after my time in prison, it is that the current system of criminal justice must change.”
Tom’s experiences in Western Australia’s prison system informed WAJA’s operating model. Volunteer students, social justice organisations and professionals in the legal industry comprise the core elements of our operating model. WAJA seeks to contribute to meaningful societal change and law reform with the goal of improving Western Australia’s justice system for everyone who comes in contact with it.
