A/O Team complete training workshops from professionals
The new Advocacy and Outreach Team has completed its workshop training in time for the beginning of Semester 2. Kate Barcham, Dominique Hansen and Anne Fielder provided three separate, informative workshops to educate the Team on different aspects of advocacy and outreach strategy.
Kate Barcham, former Media Advisor to Julie Bishop MP, gave the team insightful training on media relations and communications, with a focus on communicating with politicians and the media.
Dominque Hansen, CEO of Law Access, provided the team with the opportunity to start developing ideas and and to ask questions on advocacy and outreach techniques and strategies. Dominique described case studies from her own experience working for not-for-profits in both advocacy and outreach capacities. She used these anecdotes to illustrate various skills and approaches to outreach and advocacy which she encouraged the group to explore.
Anne Fielder, Academic and founder of Anne Fielder Consulting, took the team through the process of developing purposeful and engaging advocacy strategies, which will inform the team’s campaigning for the coming semester. Anne also gave tips on persuasive writing and explained the psychology behind persuasion.
WAJA is very grateful for the time that each guest speaker volunteered to our organisation, in preparing and taking each workshop. A very special thank you also to Bennett + Co Corporate & Commercial Law for providing us with their office space to host our workshop. Bennett & Co has also generously sponsored WAJA’s membership to The Platform, an organisation providing office space to not-for-profits in Perth’s CBD. This membership is invaluable for WAJA as it gives our volunteers a space to meet, work and facilitate workshops.
The Advocacy and Outreach Team now look forward to finessing their advocacy strategies and campaign proposals in a final training workshop on the Raise the Age campaign with Social Reinvestment WA.
We look forward to seeing how the new team can create ripples of change in Semester 2.
